Participant Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the occupational therapy home modifications assessment process within the unique context of the person and their environment
- Describe the relevance of the Australian Standards to modifications in the home environment
- Engage in the clinical reasoning process when prescribing home modifications
- Draw plans for home modifications to scale
- Identify creative solutions to problems within the home environment and determine the preferred option with the client and relevant others
- Articulate the principles relevant to:
- rail placement
- ramp installation
- bathroom modifications
Outline the medico-legal issues related to the planning and implementation of home modifications
About the Presenter: Margaret Neuss
Margaret Neuss is currently employed by the NSW HMMS State Council as the Specialist Occupational Therapist for NSW and has extensive experience as a practising Occupational Therapist in both metropolitan and regional/rural settings in NSW. She completed her Diploma in Occupational Therapy (NSW) in 1975 and her Master of Education (UNSW) in 1989. Margaret is also co-author of the Environmental Modifications in the Home Level 1 Workshop. She is passionate about environmental modifications and has presented the Environmental Modifications in the Home Level 1.
About the Presenter: Loris Higgins
After completing her Diploma in Occupational Therapy (NSW) in 1975, Loris worked at Concord Hospital. After travelling overseas, Loris then worked as an OT in the UK, Papua New Guinea and as a co-ordinator for a Home Care program in New York. For the past 14 years Loris has worked for the Aged Care & Rehabilitation Medicine Service at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. This position combines two roles – one as community OT and the other as delegate of an Aged Care Assessment Team. This role has provided her with invaluable experience in home visiting and home modification. Loris is the co-author of the Environmental Modifications in the Home, Level 1 Workshop with Margaret Neuss and like Margaret she has a passion for environmental modifications. She has presented the Environmental Modifications in the Home Level 1 Workshop for OT AUSTRALIA NSW.
