PREREQUISITES

Prior learning activities

Participants should have completed/listened to a basic ‘Introduction to EBP’ webinar/recording, such as the Occupational Therapy Australia EBP Competencies: The Basics online webinar listed above. At the introductory workshop, examples and a demonstration were provided of structured clinical questions for efficient searching. It is assumed that participants will know how to write and structure a clinical question using the PICO format, access and use databases/sites to find appropriate research for appraisal, and obtain a journal article online or directly from the authors. Also that they will have an awareness of biases affecting research, and names of study designs (eg RCT, systematic review) from the introductory workshop. Participants will be asked to complete homework before attending the workshop, using the assumed knowledge and skills (see below).

Materials

Please obtain the following two articles (freely available online) and have them beside you or on your computer screen to view during the webinar:

  • Wang, C.F. et al (2014) Music therapy improves sleep quality in acute and chronic sleep disorders: A meta-analysis of 10 randomised studies. International Journal of Nursing Studies, 51, 51-62.
  • Jeon, HS et al (2012). Effect of intensive training with a spring-assisted hand orthosis on movement smoothness in upper extremity following stroke: A pilot clinical trial. Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, 19(4) 320-328.
Pre-webinar homework

Please complete the following prior to attempting this webinar:

  1. Write 3 structured clinical questions about the effectiveness of an intervention/service using the PICO format
  2. Search for studies which may answer the questions, using the process and strategies introduced in the first workshop
  3. Review search results [Limit searching to 30 minutes per question]
  4. Obtain one or more full-text article – either a randomised controlled trial (RCT) or a systematic review – that addresses one of your 3 questions.
  5. Download a critical appraisal form for RCTs (the PEDro scale) and systematic reviews (AMSTAR criteria) –use Google to find these instruments if necessary.
  6. Keep the articles and appraisal forms beside you during the workshop/session

Completion of this recorded webinar accounts for 1.5 hours of CPD.

At the request of the presenter, access to this recorded webinar is FREE to all members and non-members of Occupational Therapy Australia.
