Getting started with generative AI: A beginner’s guide for OTs

A practical, beginner-friendly workshop designed to help occupational therapists confidently get started with generative AI and apply it safely and effectively in everyday practice.

Program Overview

Have you heard colleagues, friends or family talking about artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, or generative AI and wondered how this technology could actually support your work as an occupational therapist?

If you’re curious but unsure where to start, this practical and interactive workshop is designed for you.

Join experienced occupational therapists Will Crowe and Jess Francis as they guide you through real-world applications of generative AI in occupational therapy practice. You will explore how AI tools can enhance both administrative efficiency and clinical decision-making while maintaining ethical, safe and professional standards.

What You Will Learn

In this practical session, you will be guided step-by-step through:

  • Setting up and accessing generative AI platforms
  • Basic prompt writing
  • Using AI to support your clinical practice including report writing, case notes and client resources
  • Critically reviewing AI-generated outputs
  • Ethical considerations, privacy, security and professional responsibility when using AI

Free generative AI programs will be utilised during this session  - ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini

By the End of This Session You Will:

  • Feel confident getting started with generative AI in your OT practice
  • Understand practical ways AI can support both administrative and clinical tasks
  • Understand how to apply generative AI safely, effectively and ethically in professional settings

OTs at any stage of their career who are new to generative AI and unsure of how to get started

The session will run for approximately 90 minutes

CPD HOURS:
Total CPD claimable workshop hours: 1.5 hours

Please allow 48 hours for your CPD Certificate to be loaded in your CPD Tracker after course completion.

This session WILL NOT BE RECORDED as it is an interactive workshop

Participants will be able to access the course materials online in their OTA account for12 weeks after the event

Jess Francis

Jess has over 12 years occupational therapy experience across a range of private sectors as a clinician and in senior leadership roles and recently completed postgraduate research exploring the use of virtual reality.

Will Crowe

With a significant interest in the intersection between technology and activity participation, Will is an OT whose dominant area of practice involves the prescription of assistive and inclusive technological equipment to assist his clients attain their goals. His area of professional passion lies in facilitating accessible video game engagement with clients living with a range of physical and cognitive disabilities. Will has worked largely in private practice and for not-for-profit organisations as well as lecturing part-time at Flinders University and is an OTA Divisional Council member for SA. Will believes that the rapidly growing potential applications for AI are something to be embraced, with appropriate considerations. It is technology that has the potential to revolutionise not just occupational therapy practice but also the way in which people participate in their everyday lives.
