OVERVIEW

This Interest Group (IG) is open to all OTA members working in or with an interest in the area of mental health. The aims of the group include:

•            To provide opportunities for networking, professional development and education.

•            To educate, provide support, and create a safe space to discuss clinical practice (research and evidence-based practice, innovative OT practice, lived experience).

TOPIC:

Complex case scenario – Providing Occupational Therapy supports to a client with schizoaffective disorder who is living alone in the community

Sarah will present a case scenario of a woman in her 30s with schizoaffective disorder.  The client wants to engage with OT to support good mental health so that she can continue to live independently in the community.  Alcohol consumption, family challenges, and community housing problems are complicating factors.

As a group we will discuss:

• How to define useful OT goals
• What assessment information is essential
• What intervention frameworks or theories would be applied
• What specific intervention strategies or tools might be used
• How progress would be assessed
