
Working in Australian Schools: A Practical Guide for OTs
This workshop is for occupational therapists new to working in school settings covering key topics areas including legislation, intervention models, assessments, and collaboration with teachers, as well as opportunities to participate in discussions and network with peers.
Program Overview
This 2-part interactive workshop series is designed specifically for early career occupational therapists working in Australian school environments or those OTs new to working in school settings. This series aims to equip OTs with essential knowledge and practical skills crucial for effective intervention and support in educational settings.
Content will include education regarding OT process models and centre around the direct application of the tiered model of intervention.
Discussion will include information applicable to OTs both employed by schools, a state education department as well as those in private or community practice working with schools.
Key learning objectives of this 2-part workshop:
- Focus on foundational knowledge about legislation, education systems and models of intervention
- Explore different models of practice for OTs in school: consultative & tiered models of support
- Provide insights into developments in inclusive education
- Explore conducting formal and informal assessments within the school environment
- Discuss strategies for working with teachers to support students within their classroom
- Support the use of clinical reasoning in the school setting
- Discuss a range of resources and tools for use in school-based settings
- Share practical tips for working in school environments
- Use case studies to support learning
The workshop will consist of presentations, discussion forums, Q&A and provides opportunities for networking with other occupational therapists.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop series is suitable for early career occupational therapists or those new to working in the education sector. This workshop series is suitable for those employed by a school, education department as well as community based paediatric therapists.
Please note:
This course was not developed for OTs with extensive experience in working in school settings, although all levels of experience are welcomed
This 2-part workshop is an adaptation of the previously hosted 3 part workshop series held in 2024 through OTA and will cover similar content.

Participants will be assigned 12 weeks to access the course materials (including recording) via our online learning platform in their OTA Account.
RECORDING ACCESS
Please note that this session WILL NOT BE RECORDED as it is an interactive workshop.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is an online workshop which includes activities and group interaction. Participation will require a PC, laptop or similar device with a video and microphone. For the best experience of the workshop we recommend a quiet and private space to limit interruptions, promote audio quality and afford privacy to all participants during activities.

Presenters
Megan King
Megan King is an experienced Occupational Therapist with over 20 years’ experience in public health, clinical mental health services across Victoria. Megan transitioned into the Education setting and has worked as an Occupational Therapist in schools for 7 years, including within the Mental Health Practitioner initiative established by the Department of Education Victoria and in a discipline specific role as an OT. She also works as a Clinical Practitioner at La Trobe University.

Megan West
Megan West is an occupational therapist who has worked in paediatrics for more than 9 years. Megan has worked within the QLD, VIC and NSW school systems. In her work within the education sector, Megan has had a variety of roles including working individually with students, running group programs, providing teacher coaching and running presentations and workshops for teachers and leadership staff. Megan is passionate about developing the role of OT’s in the education system, and will be presenting later this year at the National Education Summit in Melbourne. Megan is currently employed in a private practice in Queensland.
