Develop your neurological practice skills by joining this comprehensive six-part series designed specifically for early career occupational therapists. Whether you're fresh out of university, starting a new role in neuro rehab, or looking to build confidence in this complex area of practice, this series will help you develop essential clinical skills and practical strategies you can apply straight away. 

Delivered by experienced occupational therapist Nicole de la Perrelle, over six weeks on consecutive Fridays across October and November 2026, each 90-minute webinar offers a deep dive into key areas of neurological assessment, reasoning, and intervention, supporting you to build your knowledge step-by-step. From making sense of assessment findings to supporting upper limb recovery, addressing cognitive challenges, and managing visual and perceptual issues, this series combines expert guidance with evidence-based approaches and practical tips you can use in real clinical situations. 

Session Outline  

This six-week course includes weekly interactive sessions complemented by resources and videos to be viewed flexibly in your own time (approx. 30 minutes per week) to enhance learning and practical application. 

The live interactive sessions will include a presentation of the weekly topic and discussion of key concepts, opportunities for reflection, and dedicated time for questions and answers. 

Session 1: Friday 2nd October 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEST 

Neurological Assessment 

An introduction to assessing motor, sensory, cognitive, visual, and perceptual difficulties across a range of neurological conditions including stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkison’s disease. 

Session 2: Friday 9th October 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEDT 

Clinical Reasoning and Development of Treatment Plans 

Develop the skills to build individualised, evidence-informed treatment plans including duration, repetitions and intensity, grounded in neuroplasticity principles and client goals. 

Session 3: Friday 16th October 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEDT 

Evidence--Based Upper Limb Interventions  

Explore the evidence base for upper limb rehabilitation including sensory retraining, mirror box therapy, mental imagery, functional electrical stimulation, constraint-induced movement therapy, and task-specific practice. 

Session 4: Friday 23rd October 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEDT 

Cognitive Rehabilitation 

Learn key strategies for addressing attention, memory, information processing, executive functioning, and reduced insight and awareness in clients with neurological conditions. 

Session 5: Friday 30th October 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEDT 

Vision, Visuospatial and Visual Perception Re-training   

Understand and apply strategies for managing visual field deficits, inattention and neglect, and visual perceptual difficulties common in neurological rehabilitation. 

Session 6: Friday 6th November 2026, 12 noon – 1:30pm AEDT 

Implementing Your Plan and Problem-Solving Challenging Situations 

Bring it all together by translating your learning into practical, client-centred intervention with real-world tips and structured approaches to problem-solving common challenges in neuro rehab. 

 

What you will learn (key learning objectives): 

• Learn and apply clinical assessment skills and tools to evaluate motor, sensory, cognitive, visual and perceptual difficulties with individuals with a range of neurological conditions including stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and functional neurological disorder.   

• Develop individualised treatment plans including duration, repetitions and intensity based on assessment findings, client goals, neuroplasticity principles and incorporating evidence based neurological rehabilitation.   

• Build clinical reasoning skills in justifying and providing rationale for using remediation-based approaches linked with goals and meaningful occupations with individuals with neurological conditions.   

• Understand and apply evidence-based practice to upper limb rehabilitation including sensory retraining and interventions for development of motor function including mirror box, mental imagery, functional electrical stimulation, constraint induced movement therapy and task specific practice.   

• Learn key strategies and approaches to address common cognitive difficulties including attention, memory, information processing, executive functioning and reduced insight and awareness.      

• Develop understanding of methods and approaches for managing visual field deficits, visual attention challenges (inattention and neglect) and visual perceptual difficulties I neurological rehabilitation. 

• Build a practical ready-to-use knowledge, skills, strategies as well as problem-solving approaches that can be applied immediately with your clients, thereby increasing your confidence and clinical effectiveness in neuro rehab.

ACCESS: 

Live attendance is encouraged, however to support access to this neuro rehabilitation series, the sessions (except breakout rooms / interactive components) will be recorded so that if you are unable to attend one session or need to step away for a short period or wish to go back and rewatch you will have these options available to you.   

Participants will be able to access the course materials along with the recordings in their OTA account for the duration of the event and for a further 12 weeks after the event.
